A Program with a Mission

For over 57 years, Weingarten Children’s Center (WCC) has been a leader in teaching Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) to young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. WCC operates as a school and clinic in Redwood City, California (Bay Area) that uses a cognitive curriculum to teach LSL in conjunction with observation, reasoning, and social and emotional development. WCC prepares children who are deaf or hard of hearing to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically, setting them up for lifelong success.

Our Services

Specialized Classes

WCC offers in-person classes from infancy through Kindergarten. A student’s hearing journey begins with our Little One and Me parent coaching class, advances to our parent participation Toddler classes, and progresses through our Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classes. Our LSL specialized teachers partner with families to grow spoken language through child-led exploration and inquiry.

Auditory Verbal Therapy

Our team of LSL specialized Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) work closely with teachers toward students’ goals. SLPs are dedicated to WCC’s mission of family-centered education through on-going collaboration and live-coaching.

Occupational Therapy

WCC offers Occupational Therapy as one of our interdisciplinary services. Many students who are deaf or hard of hearing also experience sensory and motor-based challenges that require targeted intervention. Our dedicated Snoezelen multi-sensory therapy room provides these children with opportunities to develop the skills they need to successfully access classroom-based learning.

Audiological Services

Weingarten Children’s Center provides Educational Audiology support and direct services to ensure our students have appropriate amplification and optimal auditory access for the development of Listening and Spoken Language within a center-based program. Our experienced Audiologist partners with the WCC teaching staff, families, and each student’s managing Audiologist to provide timely, comprehensive, and integrated services.

Our Programs Work

“Profound. We would never have been able to achieve the level of listening and spoken language that our child has without WCC. WCC has the best DHH teachers and therapists and their parent teacher model is critical for equipping parents to teach their children around the clock.”

Parent of Weingarten Student

“WCC gave our son the chance to hear and listen. His receptive language and ability to connect with others, enjoy music and movies, read books — all of that world opened up to him. One of his favorite things to do is dance, all of that thanks to WCC.”

Parent of a Weingarten Alumni Student

“Apart from excellent spoken language, my child learned key life skills like confidence, compassion and self advocacy at WCC that helped share her character and continue to contribute to her success and make her a kind and charming human with a strong desire to give back.”

Parent of a Weingarten Alumni Student

“Life-changing! WCC helped my daughter develop beautiful spoken language, appropriate social and cognitive skills to transition to mainstream school and adapt smoothly to a noisy regular hearing environment.”

Parent of a Weingarten Alumni Student

“WCC had a huge positive impact on our daughter’s life for the following reasons: 1) When our daughter was first identified, we received a lot of support from the school’s staff and community.  2) She received the best of care from the amazing teachers and therapists, who taught her how to listen through her CIs, advanced her cognitive skills and worked very hard on her receptive language and even harder …

… on the expressive. 3) WCC taught us as a family how to best support our deaf child at home and how to advocate for her. 4) Morning Music taught our daughter to be comfortable on a stage and in front of a crowd :)”

Will you help us give the gift of language?

Weingarten Children’s Center’s intensive LSL education and therapy services help our students close the gap with hearing peers, preparing them to succeed in mainstream educational settings.

We depend on support for:

Scholarships – We seek to ensure that every family that has chosen Listening and Spoken Language for their child has access to specialized education and services. An increasing number of families require financial assistance each year to support their child’s Listening and Spoken Language journey.

Tuition support for our youngest – Early and intensive intervention centered on parent learning is crucial to the development of Listening and Spoken Language. We created our Little One and Me and Toddler Classes to ensure quality programming is accessible to families during this critical window of auditory and language development.
