TeachLSL™ is a virtual program that teaches preschool aged children who are deaf or hard of hearing how to listen & talk.
TeachLSL™ is available to children ages 3 – 6 who are beyond commuting distance to Weingarten Children’s Center. TeachLSL™ is designed to provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) support services to students throughout California already enrolled in school district programs.
TeachLSL™ providers (Teachers of the Deaf or Speech Language Pathologists) support the academic needs of students and also assess their language, listening, and speech skills, ensuring that they are making the most of their hearing technology. Components of the TeachLSL™ include:
- Individualized Education Plan (IEP) support; including goal writing, advocacy, and attending IEP meetings
- Observations and mentoring
- Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE)
- Consulting services
- Individual or group therapy sessions
- In-services
- Parent education sessions
TeachLSL™ Services
Virtual Class
TeachLSL™ Class provides virtual LSL services to groups of up to six children. Classes typically occur three times a week for 30 minutes. Classes are taught by a Teacher of the Deaf/Listening & Spoken Language Specialist.
TeachLSL™ Teleintervention
TeachLSL™ Teleintervention is provided by LSL-expert licensed speech-language pathologists or teachers of the deaf who lead and coach play-based, age-appropriate activities. Teletherapy frequency is determined based on each student’s individual needs and goals.
Caregiver/Provider Education
TeachLSL™ Caregiver/Provider Education Sessions coach parents or caregivers so they can continue and reinforce learning 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Sessions are typically 30 minutes weekly. Topic examples include: hearing devices, audiograms, LSL strategies, auditory, speech & language development and more!
Consult
TeachLSL™ Consult services support the child’s IEP team through: observing, mentoring, and/or coaching to help develop and support IEP goals.
*Teach LSL™ professionals are comfortable working on these LSL strategies in Total Communication classrooms. We aim to be flexible to help meet the needs of staff and students.
